How to Spring Clean Your Entire Life - The Wholesome Handbook

Spring is finally, blessedly upon us, and she brings with her all that glorious opportunity for rebirth and renewal. Now is the time to till our soil, to breathe life into all of the corners of our soul, to release the old to make room for the new. It’s the ideal time to refresh not only our homes, but our entire lives.

Throw open the windows and let your rooms bathe in the loamy, leafy smell of spring. Wipe down your walls with lavender and sage, wash floors, scrub appliances. Gently tuck your winter blankets away for the season, and unfurl your sheer summer linens into the fresh air. Take everything you own out of your closet, and only put back the items that you love. Only the best should touch your body – donate everything else. Fill your home with new greenery, huge leafy philodendrons, dramatic string-of-pearls. Burn beeswax candles, shake out the rugs, re-season your cast irons, and scrub out the old frost from the icebox.

Honestly evaluate your relationships, and whether they are empowering, fulfilling, and genuine, or draining, damaging, and strained. Gently let go of people who do not have a place in your life anymore – no need to officially break anything off, just invest your energy into the people who uplift you instead. Love people for who they are instead of your idea of who they could become. Reach out to people you miss. Begin honest conversations when a relationship needs to be healed.

Nourish yourself well. Spring is the perfect time to re-evaluate what you are putting into your one sacred vehicle. Pay attention to how what you eat makes you feel, listen to your intuition, and adjust accordingly. Eat seasonally, and revel in the glories of fresh asparagus, peppery radish, and delicate pea shoots. Stretch and move – with spring’s arrival, you are no longer a she-bear in hibernation, but a bird in flight. Trim your split ends, cleanse your skin with essential oils, visit natural healing springs, and take an entire day purely for self-care.

Tend to your spirit. Spring is a time of awakening, of rebirth. Spend time with nature, listening to the returning birdsong, letting the playful breeze run like fingers through your hair. The earth has much wisdom to share, if only we take the time to listen. Spend time in meditation, contemplation, or prayer. Consult with your spiritual leader, re-read books that inspire you, share stories in circles. Howl at the moon. Explore bravely the depths of your soul, dredge up the long-repressed dirt and rot, and let it breathe. Shit is the best fertilizer, after all.

Harness all of spring’s anticipatory energy to set new goals for yourself, lay out new action plans, and prepare for the future. Set financial and career goals, and enlist experts to help put you on a trajectory towards success. Rewrite your 5-year plan. Revisit the intentions you set forth for the new year, and ask yourself if you are honouring them to your full potential, or even if they need to be revised. Envision your most fulfilled life, and take steps every day to achieve it.

Happy spring cleaning, and may you emerge into summer’s lively, sexy, bountiful richness feeling renewed and refreshed!
